The landscape of the new engineering labs in the core of Cal Poly's campus was designed to create a link from the existing engineering plaza to the new lab building. The use of strong angluar planting comliments the building shape and creates a flow from the building to the more curved grass patches in the current plaza. The whole site explores the use of many innovative sustainable features from bioswales to the green roof that doubles as a horticulture study space for senior projects.
The front entry is open with permeable paver patches that all drain to the central glass spiral pavement feature. The water flows under the glass pavers and drops off at the center into a large underground cistern. The water caught in this cistern provides water for the sites irrigation needs.
Night perspective of front entry shows the overall lighting plan with the main feature being the spiral lighting rill in the center of the plaza. The lab space is open 24 hours with key access to students, so outdoor lighting was essential to aid in nighttime travel and outdoor work spaces.

This elevation of the front entry of the building despicts how nearly every roof of the building can be utillized by people. One is an outdoor plaza on the second floor that also has some outdoor study spaces for on campus groups. The thrid floor is covered in green roof planting that is modular. This allows for students to study how the green roof works amnd even test their own green roof planting.
The elevation depicts the building face that looks out over the current engineering plaza.
